Outdoor community sale with up to 20 vendors and food truck this Saturday

Oct 1, 2019

Anyone wanting good food and great deals from the top independent merchants in Texarkana needs to mark their calendar for this Saturday.

Owl's Nest on the Loop Flea Market and Antiques, whose name was recently changed from The Squirrel's Nest, is hosting its first Fall sales event under the new name.

The event will be held outdoors on Saturday, October 5, 2019. Up to 20 independent vendors will be there along with lots of fun specials happening inside as well.

A food truck and art project workshop will also be offered on the day.

Jayna McKinnon, who owns two Owl's Nest locations in Texarkana with her husband Kenny, said customers might be surprised by what they find on Saturday at the New Boston Road location.

"At the Fall sale last year. I bought one of my most prized finds — a beautiful concrete statue of a girl for the yard," Jayna McKinnon said. "What's great about this sale is that vendors can bring larger items that might not be able to go inside the store or treasured small items they want to personally sell."

The Owl's Nest owner said she will be more than a business owner on Saturday.

"I am definitely going to be shopping myself," she said.

What will you find?

McKinnon said the event will begin early Saturday from around 7:30 am until mid-afternoon. Vendors who are participating in the event all have booths at the Owl's Nest as well.

"There will be all kinds of special sales inside and outside," McKinnon said. "We will also be having a food truck called J11 Gourmet Burgers, which is from the Texarkana area."

McKinnon said Fall is an excellent time to offer this special event to the Four States region.

"Fall has proven to be the best times for a sale like this, and you will find great deals," she said. "Our vendors have a lot of unique items, but they only have so much space to display their merchandise inside. You don't know what you'll find until you come and look for yourself."

Pumpkin decorating at 11 am

A community art project workshop is also being held this Saturday at the Owl's Nest on the Loop.

Group Project Studio is a dedicated art space inside the building, and a workshop will be held from 11 am to 1 pm on October 5 at Owl's Nest on the Loop. The cost is $35.

On Saturday, project participants will be designing unique "checked pumpkins" in the MacKenzie-Childs Style that can be reused year after year.

The two-hour class features instruction and all the supplies you need to decorate a festive fall pumpkin.

Participants are invited to bring refreshments or food truck offerings as they complete their projects.

Group Project Studio is a new venture from the McKinnon family which offers special art classes during the day and on some evenings.

"Grab your coffee on Saturday, and bring it with you. You'll have a great time," McKinnon said.

McKinnon said participants enjoy being able to bring home their creative designs for use in their own homes or to use as unique gifts for loved ones or friends.

What's on the menu

No one will be hungry at Saturday's event since Jayna McKinnon said she was fortunate enough to convince the J11 Gourmet Burgers food truck to set up for Saturday's event.

"I flagged them down, and I was so happy they wanted to come."

J11 Gourmet Burgers is a local food truck that started in July 2019. It is a veteran-owned company from Rocky and Sarah Lackman.  Rocky was in the US Army for 14 years and served in Germany and Iraq.

After only a few months, Texarkana has warmed to J11 Gourmet Burgers, and the company is in constant demand due to its unique menu items — which are all named after family members.

For instance, the most popular item on the menu is the Joshua Burger, according to Rocky Lackman.

"We're excited about J11 Gourmet Burgers being here," McKinnon said.

New vendors

The Owl's Nest on the Loop recently completed a building overhaul and partial renovation.

It has also become home to some popular new vendors.

McKinnon said one of the most exciting new booths at the Owl's Nest on the Loop is a kids' clothing boutique.

"The clothing is exceptional, and the value is remarkable," McKinnon said. "These are the types of things you would find if you went to a standalone store — but without the high price."

"Nothing is more than $24, and the quality is terrific," she added. "It's just adorable kids' clothing in toddler sizes with plans to expand into other sizes as well."

Meet the new manager

During the Saturday event, customers can also introduce themselves to the Owl's Nest on the Loop's new manager, Pat Baker.

"She really seems to be doing a great job," McKinnon said. "She enjoys the interaction with people."

According to McKinnon, the experience Pat Baker gained working with the public has been helpful in her new position at Owl's Nest on the Loop.

"She's supposed to be retired, so it's a blessing for her and a blessing for us that she's here," McKinnon said. "But she may be too busy to actually be retired now."

News from the Boulevard

While the New Boston Road location is having this promotion because of its expansive frontage area, Owl's Nest on the Blvd will be hosting a special Halloween promotion that will be announced soon.

"We will also be having our 6th anniversary the first week of December at the Boulevard, so watch out for that," McKinnon said.

McKinnon said Owl's Nest on Texas Boulevard never disappoints people.

"Our vendors have very high standards, and we love seeing happy customers," she said. "We're excited to soon be celebrating six years."

It happens Saturday

Owner Jayna McKinnon said she is proud of the welcoming atmosphere at the Owl's Nest, and she said she looks forward to the big event on Saturday, October 5.

McKinnon added: "This is one of the best sales of the year, and people will want to come."

Editor's note: The Owl's Nest on the Loop special event is scheduled for Saturday, October 5 on New Boston Road in Texarkana, Texas.
