Who deserves a Texarkana Historic Preservation and Awareness Award?

Apr 7, 2022

The Texarkana Museums System has announced the opening of nominations for the 2022 Texarkana Historic Preservation and Awareness Awards.

These awards honor individuals and organizations for their outstanding contributions to preserving Texarkana’s heritage.

Members of the community are encouraged to nominate those they believe deserve recognition for the great strides in protecting and sharing local history and culture.

Nomination forms are available at TexarkanaMuseums.org/Awards. The deadline for nominations is May 3, 2022. Awards will be presented in ten categories beginning at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 28, at the P. J. Ahern Home.

“We are so pleased to host this event again,” says TMS Board President Velvet Cool. “Each year, we recognize people who go the extra mile to make sure our history is saved.”

The public can nominate any individual or organization in the appropriate category. These categories include Young Historian, Collegiate Excellence, Multi-cultural Excellence, Social Butterfly, Power of the Pen, Broadcast Media, Historic Site, Endangered Treasure, Historic Collections, and the Wilbur Smith Archivist Award.

Details about each category can be found on the Texarkana Museums System Facebook page under Events.

The deadline for nominations is May 3, 2022. Nominations can be made at the Texarkana Museums website.

Awards will be presented on May 28 at 2 p.m. at the P. J. Ahern Home Museum.

“TMS is proud to present these awards in one of the city’s National Register Properties, our own P. J. Ahern Home Museum” added Cool. “Preservation is our mission at TMS, and we are excited to share that mission with the people of Texarkana.”

The P. J. Ahern Home is a historic 1905 Classical Revival mansion located at 403 Laurel Street in Texarkana’s Arts and Historic District.

The Ahern Home is operated by Texarkana Museums System, which hosts events, programs, and exhibits at the Ahern Home every fourth Saturday of the month.
